Dynamics 365 to SAP
What moving from Dynamics 365 to SAP S/4HANA involves for oil and gas operators. Timeline, data, and risk.
Companies migrate from Dynamics 365 to SAP S/4HANA in oil and gas for one primary reason: upstream accounting capability. Dynamics 365 doesn't have native JIB or revenue distribution. When an oilfield services company grows into E&P operations, or when a D365-based E&P company outgrows its ISV workarounds for JIB, SAP IS-Oil becomes the target.
Why this migration happens
Scenario 1: oilfield services company acquires E&P assets. The company now needs upstream accounting — JIB, revenue distribution, production accounting — that Dynamics 365 can't provide natively. ISV add-ons for D365 JIB are available but limited in depth. SAP IS-Oil is the enterprise answer.
Scenario 2: E&P company scales past Dynamics 365's ceiling. Well count grows past 200–300 producing wells, revenue owners multiply into the hundreds, multi-entity complexity increases. The ISV JIB add-on starts to strain under volume. SAP IS-Oil's native capacity is the upgrade.
Scenario 3: SOX and public company requirements. Pre-IPO readiness or SEC filing requirements drive a migration to SAP, whose SOX compliance tooling — segregation of duties, financial controls, audit trail — is the market reference for public E&P companies.
The hardest parts
Chart of accounts and data model translation. SAP's data model is significantly more structured than Dynamics 365's. D365's COA has to be mapped to SAP's GL account structure with cost centres, profit centres, and controlling areas that don't exist in D365. This mapping exercise takes 4–8 weeks for a mid-size operator and surfaces legacy account structure issues that have been accumulating for years.
DOI data — the defining challenge. The division of interest (DOI) database is typically not in D365 — it's in the ISV JIB add-on, a spreadsheet, or the O&G accounting system running alongside D365. This data needs to be extracted, cleaned, and restructured into SAP IS-Oil's partner and interest tables. For an operator with 50 wells and 200 revenue owners, this is 6–10 weeks of work. For a 200-well operator with 1,000+ revenue owners, it's 16–20 weeks.
Historical data. Open transactions — open AP, open POs, active AFEs, unclosed projects — must migrate. Historical data is a business decision: migrate 2–5 years of JIB history or archive it outside SAP with a query tool for reference. Migrating historical data extends the project by 2–3 months.
Parallel running requirement. A minimum of two full month-end closes in parallel — running both D365 and SAP simultaneously and reconciling the outputs — is the safety gate before cutover. For upstream accounting, this means producing JIB statements and revenue distributions in both systems and confirming agreement line by line.
Typical timeline
| Phase | Duration |
|---|---|
| Requirements, design, SAP build | Months 1–4 |
| Data migration design, COA mapping, IS-Oil DOI configuration | Months 3–7 |
| Development, data migration testing, integration build | Months 6–14 |
| User acceptance testing and parallel runs | Months 13–18 |
| Cutover and go-live (mid-size operator) | Month 18–24 |
What makes it succeed
The single most important factor is an IS-Oil implementation partner — not just SAP-certified, but with documented O&G accounting implementations. IS-Oil configuration requires consultants who understand both the platform and the O&G accounting conventions (JIB billing methods, IDC vs. tangible classification, royalty deduction structures). Consultants who know SAP financials but not O&G accounting configure JIB incorrectly; the errors surface during the first parallel close when it's expensive to fix.
