Dynamics 365 to IFS
Migrating from Dynamics 365 to IFS Cloud for asset-intensive oil and gas operations. The hard parts.
Companies migrate from Dynamics 365 to IFS Cloud in oil and gas when enterprise asset management becomes the dominant ERP requirement and Dynamics 365's EAM depth — which relies on ISV add-ons rather than native capability — is no longer sufficient. This migration is most common in midstream companies, pipeline operators, and oilfield services firms with large, regulated physical asset bases that have outgrown what D365 can handle natively.
Why this migration happens
Midstream asset management at scale. A midstream company running Dynamics 365 for financials adds pipeline infrastructure, compression stations, and metering equipment at a rate that overwhelms D365's asset tracking capabilities. IFS Cloud's EAM module — built natively for this asset model — is the migration target.
PHMSA regulatory compliance requirements. Pipeline operators subject to PHMSA pipeline integrity management requirements need documented inspection schedules, evidence trails, corrosion survey records, and failure analysis documentation that IFS handles natively. Dynamics 365 requires ISV extensions and custom configuration to reach the same regulatory evidence depth.
Field service complexity at scale. Oilfield services companies with large, complex field operations find that Dynamics 365 Field Service, while capable for standard field service, doesn't match IFS FSM's depth for the specific requirements of field service in asset-intensive O&G contexts — particularly around asset-linked work orders and maintenance history integration.
The hardest part: asset hierarchy rebuild
Dynamics 365 stores asset data in its Fixed Assets module, which models asset classes and depreciation schedules but doesn't model the physical hierarchy that IFS EAM requires: functional location → equipment → component → spare parts. The entire asset register needs to be restructured from D365's flat depreciation model to IFS's hierarchical EAM model.
For a midstream company with 500 pipeline segments, 50 compressor stations, and 200 metering points, this restructuring is the longest single task in the project. It requires a combination of asset data cleansing, hierarchy design workshops with operations and maintenance teams, and systematic data entry — typically 3–4 months for a mid-size asset portfolio.
Other major challenges
Maintenance history migration. Work order history in Dynamics 365 — if it's even in the ERP rather than in a separate CMMS — doesn't migrate directly to IFS's maintenance history structure. Decisions about how much historical data to migrate need to be made before the project starts. Migrating 3 years of history is manageable; migrating 10 years is usually not worth the effort given how differently the two systems model maintenance records.
Power Platform integration loss. D365's Power Apps and Power Automate integrations don't transfer to IFS. Field data capture apps built on Power Platform need to be rebuilt or replaced with IFS's mobile tools or IFS Connect integrations. This scope is routinely underestimated.
Financial data migration. Open AP, open AR, and fixed asset book values need to migrate from D365 to IFS Financials. The D365 COA needs to be mapped to IFS's dimension model. This is standard financial migration work — less complex than the asset hierarchy rebuild — but still requires careful design and validation.
Typical timeline
| Phase | Months |
|---|---|
| Asset hierarchy design and IFS EAM model build | 1–3 |
| Data migration design, financial COA mapping, integration planning | 3–8 |
| Testing with real asset and maintenance data, user acceptance | 8–14 |
| Parallel running and go-live | 14–20 |
A mid-size midstream or oilfield services company typically completes this migration in 14–20 months. Companies with larger asset databases or more complex field service operations extend to 24 months.
